Evidence-based Therapies
I provide psychological assessment and therapy to individuals or couples aged 16+. My approach to therapy is to think with you about what you are finding difficult, what your strengths are and how we can work together to help you progress towards recovery and to a richer and more fulfilling life. I am trained in evidence-based therapies which I draw on to help us to develop a plan for treatment.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT is a popular therapy which helps you to identify the interaction between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. We will look at these different elements, how they work together to cause you problems, and look at changes you can make to alleviate distress and reduce difficulties. CBT includes a number of other therapies and techniques such as mindfulness and meditation, acceptance and commitment therapy and trauma-focused therapy. CBT has been studied extensively and found to be one of the most effective therapies for problems such as anxiety, panic, worry, depression and OCD.
Schema Therapy
Schema therapy is effective where there are patterns of repeated low mood or anxiety, where someone is having problems with interpersonal relationships or where there is a history of complex trauma. Schema therapy involves identifying patterns of thinking and behaviour that you are stuck in and helps you to develop new, healthier patterns. It focuses on the relationship with yourself, increasing your healthy and compassionate side and reducing the internal critic. We will look together at where unhealthy thoughts and patterns come from, how they are affecting you now and develop techniques to change these.
Schema therapy has been studied as a treatment for personality disorders and is one of the most effective therapies for addressing these disorders at a deep and lasting level. However, it is also effective wherever there are patterns that are “stuck” or where previous therapy has failed to shift things at an emotional level.
Compassion Focused Therapy
CFT aims to increase self-compassion and to understand and address your problems from a compassionate and gentle perspective. It incorporates evolutionary understanding of psychological and emotional development to give a broader understanding of yourself.
Couples Therapy
Schema Therapy for Couples involves identifying and breaking destructive cycles within the relationship. We will identify attachment styles and patterns that interfere with healthy communication and develop new skills to relate to each other.
